Academy Award-winning filmmaker, drummer, DJ, producer, director, culinary entrepreneur, New York Times bestselling author, and member of The Roots—Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson—is the unmistakable heartbeat of Philadelphia’s most influential hip-hop group, The Roots.

A six-time Grammy Award-winning artist, Questlove has an indisputable reputation, which has landed him an additional 18 Grammy nominations and musical directing positions for everyone from D'Angelo to Jay-Z to the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

In 2021, Questlove made his directorial debut with the Academy Award-winning feature documentary Summer of Soul, which explores the legendary 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. The film premiered on the opening night of the 2021 Sundance Film Festival where it was awarded the “Grand Jury Prize” and “Audience Award for Best U.S. Documentary.” The movie broke the record for the highest-selling documentary to come out of Sundance when it was acquired by Searchlight/Hulu. It went on to win “Best Feature Documentary” at the 2022 Academy Awards, “Best Documentary” at the 2022 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), and “Best Music Film” at the 2022 Grammy Awards as well as a Peabody Award. The film was hailed as “Best Documentary” by The National Board of Review, “Documentary of the Year” by the London Critics Circle Awards, “Best Music Documentary” by the International Documentary Association, and notably received six Critics Choice Documentary Awards in the categories of “Best Documentary Feature,” “Best Director,” “Best First Documentary Feature,” “Best Editing,” “Best Archival Documentary,” and “Best Music Documentary.” Questlove was named “Best Director” by the International Documentary Association and received a nomination for “Best Director” by the Directors Guild of America. President Barack Obama highlighted Summer of Soul as one of his “Favorite Movies of 2021.” The Summer Of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised) Original Motion Picture Soundtrack was released via Legacy Recordings on January 28, 2022.

In 2025, Questlove has directed a multitude of projects including SLY LIVES! (aka the Burden of Black Genius), the original documentary about legendary musician Sly Stone, which premiered February 13th on Hulu. The film made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival to widespread critical praise; Variety called it a “a dazzling and definitive funk-pop documentary,” while The Wrap praised it as “illuminating” and “exceptionally rich,” highlighting Questlove’s “knack for cinematic pacing, compositions, and arrangement.” SLY LIVES! also received acclaim from The Hollywood Reporter, which called the film a “tender and sobering love letter” and Collider, which lauded it an “essential rock documentary.” Additionally, Questlove directed Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music, which premiered on January 27th ahead of SNL’s 50th extravaganza. The documentary was crowned the most-watched program in the all-important 18-49 demo upon its debut and received rave reviews from the likes of The Associated Press, The New York Times, NPR, and more. Variety notably described Ladies and Gentlemen as “well worth watching, probably more than once” and “a Spectacular, Definitive History of the Most Influential Music Stage in America.” Questlove has also signed on to direct a documentary about Earth, Wind & Fire.

Outside of these directorial projects, Questlove partnered with Black Thought of The Roots to Executive Produce the acclaimed documentary series, Hip-Hop: The Songs That Shook America on AMC under their production company, Two One Five Entertainment.
