Katy Bohinc is an award-winning data scientist and acclaimed artist. Her visionary polymath understanding of Millenial and Gen Z zeitgeist is informed by both deep Fortune 500 marketing insight and ancient tradition (poetry, astrology, mathematics). Katy’s poetry and art are recognized for merging disparate topics with tremendous heart. Her latest endeavor as founder/CEO of The Ratio, to apply data science and AI to studying the ancient traditions of astrology, marks her as a leading creative and scientific mind.

From her foundations at Georgetown University where she studied pure mathematics and comparative literature, she has a long-accomplished body of work across science and art.

Katy’s work as an artist has its roots in poetry. Yes, a real, published poet, Katy has three books of poetry, two edited volumes, and was Director of Tender Buttons Press from 2013 – 2020. Tender Buttons Press, established in 1989, is a who’s who in contemporary poetry: a quarter of their authors have won Guggenheim Awards for lifetime achievement. The kicker, Tender Buttons, named for Gertrude Stein’s landmark poem, exclusively publishes women writers.

Simultaneously, Katy worked as a data scientist for leading marketing agencies, operationalizing big data adoption from data soup to analytics roadmaps and strategy for the Fortune 500. In 2018, Assembly Media (now Assembly Global) won Ad Age’s Agency of the Year for their analytics capacity, a foundation which Katy helped to build from the ground up.

Like everyone, Covid provided a moment for pause and expansion. No longer performing poetry in person, Katy turned to video art, making 16 poems from her third book, Scorpio, into a visual collection. A collaboration with fashion videographer, Kezi Ban, the result is a new and enticing form of beauty and reflection on the Instagram era.

Additionally during Covid, Katy began very slowly, very quietly a start-up, The Ratio, to study the underlying assumptions of astrology with data science. TheRatio.Space is now in the data collection phase and looks forward to beginning analysis, returning Astrology to its roots as the oldest data science on earth. In association with its launch, The Ratio is releasing a limited series of digital art.

Katy’s work is varied in application and form, but a unifying thread is bridging the seemingly disparate. With her first book Dear Alain she bridges poetry and philosophy; Trinity Star Trinity poetry and the occult; Scorpio Poems (The Videos) she bridges the New York School with brand aesthetics; and The Ratio data science and astrology.

Katy is what we called in ancient times a polymath. How do we reinvent our thinking to break the barrier between “creative” and “scientist”? Because most great accomplishments from human history bridge these two categories. To Katy, it is extremely helpful to look back into ancient history for examples when creatives and scientists were one and the same.

In order to forge our way into the future we will need key principals, not key barriers. Creativity (new ways to bridge disparate concepts) and Science (systemic precision) will help us construct the necessary narrative for the new world emerging now.

Katy currently is based in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Hong Kong. She speaks Mandarin and French. She has lived all over the world and performed internationally since 2008.
