Hearts & Sciences: Why dissolving the boundary between “creative” and “scientist” is the future
Polymath KATY BOHINC sees interdisciplinary studies as the key to solving today’s polycrisis. To forge our way into the future we will need key principals, not key barriers. Creativity (new ways to bridge disparate concepts) and science (systemic precision) will help us construct the necessary narratives for the emerging world.
Exploring how the industrial revolution led us into silos of science versus creativity, Bohinc discusses that in the AI age all scientists – and leaders in every industry – need creative thinking skills, and all creatives need technological skills.
The Ratio: Ancient Astrology, Mathematics, & Data Science
Astrology AI startup founder KATY BOHINC believes that studying the past is more than a hobby; it can lead us forward in innovative new ways. In this riveting and eye-opening talk, she lays out the history of the relationship between ancient Western mathematics and astrology from the Greeks to now. In a program that includes expertly presented and mind-blowing astrology revelations, Bohinc helps audiences connect to both the past and themselves.
Visual, Audio, and Art in the Age of Social Media
Poet & scientist KATY BOHINC is no stranger to mixed mediums. In this conversation, she explores how leveraging art can disrupt marketing strategies through uniqueness, creativity, and guts. Re-inventing the image is more than just remix, which is vital, but the conceptual connection must remain.
Trinity Star Trinity: Mathematics & Poetry, an ancient practice
Polymath KATY BOHINC leads a historically driven discussion of the intersections of math and poetry. Bohinc’s work often look backs into ancient history for examples when creatives and scientists were one and the same. She describes the history of calculus, diving into the origins of calculus proofs written in poetic verse on the Indian Subcontinent around 6 B.C.E. She asks audiences, What is the relationship between math, language, poetry & song – and how does it help us today?
Katy Bohinc follows the stars with her astrological AI startup, The Ratio
Astrological AI startup founder KATY BOHINC created TheRatio.Space to study the underlying assumptions of astrology with data science. It has long been Bohinc’s dream to study the ancient science of astrology with contemporary statistical methodologies. In the age of big data, this is now possible. Bohinc’s goal is to return Astrology to its roots as the oldest data science on earth. In association with its launch, The Ratio released a limited series of 1,728 unique, hand-curated “Past Life Astro Twin” NFTs. Drawing on her previous work as a data scientist for leading Fortune 500 marketing agencies, which earned Assembly Media (now Assembly Global) Ad Age’s Agency of the Year award, Bohinc continues to push the limits and offers a revelatory perspective for leaders looking to do the same.
Katy Bohinc’s poetry ties art, science, and tradition together in powerful presentations
Author and polymath KATY BOHINC has published three books of poetry and two edited volumes. With her first book, Dear Alain, she bridges poetry and philosophy. In Trinity Star Trinity, she connects poetry and the occult, and in Scorpio Poems, she bridges the New York School School – a literary movement in the 50s and 60s – with modern brand aesthetics. Publishers Weekly called Scorpio Poems “an astute, witty feminist collection.” Bohinc converted 16 poems from Scorpio into a visual collection in collaboration with filmmaker Kezi Ban, a new and enticing form of beauty and reflection on the Instagram era.
Bohinc’s poetry and art are recognized for merging disparate topics with tremendous heart. Bohinc ties together a vast swath of the cultures we came from with where we are going in our accelerating technological age. Her memorable, culturally relevant storytelling — accessible and plainspoken, yet literary and lyrical — tie the scientific method, statistical significance, and empiricism coalesce with traditional belief systems.
Katy Bohinc is an award-winning data scientist and acclaimed artist. Her visionary polymath understanding of Millenial and Gen Z zeitgeist is informed by both deep Fortune 500 marketing insight and ancient tradition (poetry, astrology, mathematics). Katy’s poetry and art are recognized for merging disparate topics with tremendous heart. Her latest endeavor as founder/CEO of The Ratio, to apply data science and AI to studying the ancient traditions of astrology, marks her as a leading creative and scientific mind.
From her foundations at Georgetown University where she studied pure mathematics and comparative literature, she has a long-accomplished body of work across science and art.
Katy’s work as an artist has its roots in poetry. Yes, a real, published poet, Katy has three books of poetry, two edited volumes, and was Director of Tender Buttons Press from 2013 – 2020. Tender Buttons Press, established in 1989, is a who’s who in contemporary poetry: a quarter of their authors have won Guggenheim Awards for lifetime achievement. The kicker, Tender Buttons, named for Gertrude Stein’s landmark poem, exclusively publishes women writers.
Simultaneously, Katy worked as a data scientist for leading marketing agencies, operationalizing big data adoption from data soup to analytics roadmaps and strategy for the Fortune 500. In 2018, Assembly Media (now Assembly Global) won Ad Age’s Agency of the Year for their analytics capacity, a foundation which Katy helped to build from the ground up.
Like everyone, Covid provided a moment for pause and expansion. No longer performing poetry in person, Katy turned to video art, making 16 poems from her third book, Scorpio, into a visual collection. A collaboration with fashion videographer, Kezi Ban, the result is a new and enticing form of beauty and reflection on the Instagram era.
Additionally during Covid, Katy began very slowly, very quietly a start-up, The Ratio, to study the underlying assumptions of astrology with data science. TheRatio.Space is now in the data collection phase and looks forward to beginning analysis, returning Astrology to its roots as the oldest data science on earth. In association with its launch, The Ratio is releasing a limited series of digital art.
Katy’s work is varied in application and form, but a unifying thread is bridging the seemingly disparate. With her first book Dear Alain she bridges poetry and philosophy; Trinity Star Trinity poetry and the occult; Scorpio Poems (The Videos) she bridges the New York School with brand aesthetics; and The Ratio data science and astrology.
Katy is what we called in ancient times a polymath. How do we reinvent our thinking to break the barrier between “creative” and “scientist”? Because most great accomplishments from human history bridge these two categories. To Katy, it is extremely helpful to look back into ancient history for examples when creatives and scientists were one and the same.
In order to forge our way into the future we will need key principals, not key barriers. Creativity (new ways to bridge disparate concepts) and Science (systemic precision) will help us construct the necessary narrative for the new world emerging now.
Katy currently is based in San Juan, Puerto Rico and Hong Kong. She speaks Mandarin and French. She has lived all over the world and performed internationally since 2008.
