How Olympian Charlie Davies fought his way out of poverty to become a USMNT star

Olympian and acclaimed philanthropist CHARLIE DAVIES shared with CBS Sports Golazo’s Kicking It his story of overcoming adversity beyond comprehension. Despite his mother’s repeated institutionalization for mental healthcare and his father’s battle with drug addiction, Davies cared for his younger brother, taking on responsibilities such as shopping for groceries with food stamps. When Davies found soccer, everything changed for the family; his father never missed a game. Davies truly realized he had the makings of a professional athlete around age 14, but he recalls, “I knew that the only way I was going to have at least one parent with me all the time was my dad and having that connection with soccer.”

Today, beloved by a global fan base collected across a nomadic career playing in Sweden, France, Denmark, and Major League Soccer, culminating in his Olympic career for the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team. He continues to contribute to his sport as a CBS Sports broadcast analyst. Despite facing childhood adversity, Davies continues to inspire those around him with an uplifting, motivational mindset.
