As the former CEO of Dow Jones and Publisher of The Wall Street Journal from 2014 until 2020, William helped lead a period of major growth and digital transformation at the organisation. In that time, The Wall Street Journal experienced a significant increase in digital-only subscriptions, exceeding 2 million subscribers by February 2020.
William joined News Corp in 2010 in the UK as Group General Manager to oversee the digital transformation of the four masthead newsrooms. He was appointed Chief Creative Officer at News Corp in 2013 responsible for innovation at the newly formed listed company.
William was Editor-in-Chief of the Telegraph Media Group from 2005 to 2010. Under his leadership, the organisation underwent a radical digital transformation, and it was named UK Newspaper of the Year in the 2010 British Press Awards. He joined the Telegraph in 2005 from The Sunday Times where he was the Business Editor. Prior to this role he was Global News Editor of the Financial Times where he worked 1994 - 2002 and he was part of the award-winning team that led the expansion of the FT into the US market in 1997. Before joining the FT William was a business reporter for the Mail on Sunday.
William provides strategic advisory services for many different industries - ranging from startup founders to Chairman and CEOs of listed companies. He is an active mentor and angel investor. He speaks frequently about business transformation, digital product excellence and the importance and impact of culture in businesses of all sizes.
William completed an Advanced Management Program at Harvard, holds a degree in Politics and Economics from Bristol University, has a postgraduate Diploma in journalism from City University and three honorary degrees.
He serves as Vice Chair of The Associated Press Board of Directors and is Chair of the Tessa Jowell Foundation Advisory Board.
