At the request of former Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, Captain Sullenberger became a new member of the DOT’s Advisory Committee on Automation in Transportation as of January 2017. Responsible for fostering "some of the most significant technological changes to ever take place in transportation," the DOT Committee will advise on transportation automation issues across a range of industries.

In February, the feature film “Sully” won the Readers' Choice Award at AARP's Annual "Movies for Grownups" Awards Show, and Captain Sullenberger accepted the award on behalf of the film. In a star-studded night that included a Career Achievement Award for Morgan Freeman, and speeches from Viola Davis, Denzel Washington and Helen Mirren, "the evening's longest standing ovation went to Capt.
