President Clinton visits Haiti to mark the one-year anniversary of the earthquake - his 13th trip since the quake. View photos from the first day of his trip. Since the January 2010 earthquake, the Clinton Foundation has been turning the donations of money and supplies made by individuals and organizations into direct assistance for the people and government of Haiti. More than 100,000 individuals donated more than $16.4 million to the Clinton Foundation Haiti Fund. In total, the Foundation has allocated $11.5 million of the Haiti Fund to relief and recovery efforts, and facilitated the delivery of and an additional $16 million dollars worth of goods donated by other organizations — making the combined value of assistance to Haiti approximately $27.5 million. Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife Lynne Cheney appeared together at the Bakersfield Business Conference, and the Bakersfield Californian reported that nearly "10,000 people crowded into the Bakersfield Business Conference's main tent" to see them. On January 9th, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan toured a polling station in a school in the Sudan's southern regional capital Juba, with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. South Sudanese turned out in jubilant droves to vote on the first day of a weeklong referendum, expected to lead to the partition of Africa’s largest nation and the creation of the world’s newest state. “It is important that the energy and enthusiasm lead to solid results that are accepted by everybody.” He added, “I believe this is democracy at its most basic where people are choosing their future and by whom they wish to be governed.” Read more... |
