MARGARET CUOMO is a board certified radiologist and renowned advocate for the prevention of cancer. A leading voice on how we can all live healthier and longer lives, Dr. Cuomo is the author of A World Without Cancer: The Making of a New World and the Real Promise of Prevention, a groundbreaking book that explores needed improvements in screening, diagnosis, patient education, and coordination among governments, academic researchers, and pharmaceutical companies. Based on her own first-hand experience with cancer patients, A World Without Cancer, was turned into a powerful PBS documentary hosted by Dr. Cuomo herself. A vocal and active cancer advocate, Dr. Cuomo was named to the board of HeritX, the only organization that focuses solely on preventing inherited cancers, was selected to Co-Chair the 2018 Susan G. Komen Impact Awards, and was presented with the “WebMD Health Heroes Award” in the Trailblazers category thanks to her work changing the health care landscape, confronting health challenges and giving back to improve the lives of others. Biography

Margaret I. Cuomo, M.D. is a board certified radiologist, teaching professional, and national advocate for the prevention of cancer, heart disease and diabetes. Her book, A World Without Cancer: The Making of a New World and the Real Promise of Prevention, presents a provocative and surprising look into the ways that profit, personalities, and politics obstruct real progress in the war on cancer. This groundbreaking book, based on her own first-hand experience with cancer patients, has been described as “urgent and powerful,” “an eye-opening look at the way we fight cancer,” and a “call for bold leadership to transform our system from treatment to prevention.”

Dr. Cuomo graduated Summa cum laude from St. John's University and received an M.D. degree from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. She served as an attending physician in diagnostic radiology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset specializing in diagnostic radiology and dedicated much of her time and energy to the diagnosis of cancer and AIDS using state-of-the art CT scans, Ultrasound examinations, and MRI. Dr. Cuomo also provided academic instruction to medical students at New York University Hospital and Cornell University Medical College, and has published numerous articles in medical journals.

Dr. Cuomo has been interviewed on many TV shows, such as Good Morning America, Good Day New York, Morning Joe, Inside Edition, and national and regional radio programs, and has been featured in many magazines and newspapers, including Better Homes and Gardens, Education Update, Family Circle, Glamour, InStyle, Manhattan, Metro Newspapers, Networking, New York Daily News, O Magazine, Parade, People, Prevention, Redbook, Vogue and Women’s Day, and on-line sites (DoctorOz.com, Glamour.com, DailyBeast.com, Prevention.com, BlackstoneAudio.com, ASCOPost.com, EverydayHealth.com).

Dr. Cuomo is a contributor and a member of the Medical Review Board of the Huffington Post, and is also a regular contributor to WebMD. She advocates nationally for the prevention of cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

The Cuomo family’s commitment to public service is evident. Dr. Cuomo’s late father is former New York State Governor Mario Cuomo, and her brother is New York State Governor, Andrew Cuomo. In addition, her mother, Matilda Raffa Cuomo, is the founder of the New York State Mentoring Program, and her brother is CNN anchor Chris Cuomo. Dr. Cuomo is married to Howard Maier, who served as Chairman of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County for nine years.

Dr. Cuomo’s affiliations include the American Association of Women Radiologists, American College of Radiology, Long Island Radiological Society, Nassau County Medical Society, New York State Radiological Society, New York State Medical Society, and Radiological Society of North America. She is an Honoree of Association of Italian American Educators (2003, 2005), and an Honoree of National Organization of Italian American Women (2004). In 2011, Dr. Cuomo was awarded the “Commendatore dell'Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana” (2011), the “Commendation of the Order of the Star” conferred by the President and Prime Minister of Italy.
