Visionary Leaders in Social Advocacy
Marc and Craig Kielburger are both accomplished social advocates, leadership specialists, bestselling authors and highly sought –after speakers. Free the Children was founded by Craig Kielburger in 1995 at the age of 12, when he gathered 11 school friends to begin a crusade against child labor. Ten years later, Free the Children is the largest network of children helping children through education in the world, with more than one million young people involved in the network’s programs in 45 countries. Craig has received the Nelson Mandela Human Rights Award, the World Economic Forum GLT Award, the honorary Top 20 Under 20 Award, the Roosevelt Freedom Medal, the Governor General’s Medal of Meritorious Service, the State of the World Forum Award and the World’s Children’s Prize for the Rights of the Child, also known as the Children’s Nobel Prize. Craig is also the recipient of an honorary doctorate of education from Nipissing University for his work in leadership development and is the youngest person ever to be selected as one of Canada’s “40 Top Leaders Under Forty."
Marc first became socially involved when he was 13 years old through his determination to protect the environment. He went on to serve as a parliamentary page in the Canadian House of Commons, work with AIDS patients in the slums of Bangkok, and volunteer in Kenya, where he helped local women to establish a fair trade cooperative.
Now 29 years old, Marc is a Harvard graduate and Rhodes Scholar. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University, having completed a degree in international relations. After winning a coveted Rhodes scholarship he went on to complete a law degree at Oxford University with an emphasis on human rights law.
