Laura Tyson honored by Smith College for shattering glass ceilings

LAURA TYSON received her alma mater’s most distinguished award: The Smith College Medal. Presented annually to an elite group of the world’s most pioneering women, the award goes to those who have lived their lives in a manner that exemplifies “the true purpose” of a liberal arts education. Tyson, a renowned economist, was the first woman to chair the White House Council of Economic Advisors and first woman to serve as Dean of the London Business School. Tyson also served as Director of the National Economic Council and Dean of the Haas Business School. Her dedication to positive social change and long list of achievements have left “a trail of shattered glass ceilings.” Tyson’s acceptance speech, during which she encouraged students to, “do whatever you want, and if you hit a barrier just break it,” drew Twitter praise. Tyson continues to work for gender equality on a global scale serving as co-chair on the World Economic Forum’s Council on Women’s Empowerment.
