Building a Blue Chip Corporate Staff: The GE Legal Experience

In 1980, the New Republic called Ben Heineman the “possessor of the best resume in America.” It's years later, but it’s still hard to argue with the assessment.
Mr. Heineman graduated from Harvard College where he served as the Editorial Chairman of the Crimson, was a Rhodes Scholar, served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Law Journal, clerked for Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, was an assistant secretary for policy at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and wrote books on British race relations and the American presidency. From 1987 to 2005, Mr. Heineman worked as GE’s Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, serving under CEOs Jack Welch and Jeff Immelt.
Today, he is Senior Fellow at Harvard Law School and Harvard’s Kennedy School, and Senior Counsel at WilmerHale. Recently, Harvard University Press published a new book by Mr. Heineman, titled High Performance with High Integrity.
